When you are building an internet business in your spare time, every hour counts. One of the highest-leverage investments you can make is in tools and systems that automate the repetitive tasks eating up your limited working hours.
Why Automation Matters Even More in 2026
Back in 2010, I recommended specific software tools for automating directory submissions, article submissions, social bookmarking, and backlink building. Those specific tools and tactics are mostly obsolete now — Google's algorithm updates rendered many of those old-school SEO automation strategies ineffective or outright risky.
But the underlying principle is more relevant than ever. The automation landscape in 2026 is dramatically more powerful than anything we had sixteen years ago. Here are the categories where automation delivers the biggest time savings for part-time entrepreneurs today.
Modern Automation for Internet Businesses
Email marketing automation. Tools like ConvertKit, ActiveCampaign, and Mailchimp can run entire nurture sequences, segment your audience, and deliver the right message at the right time without any manual intervention. Set up your email funnels once and they work for you around the clock.
Social media scheduling. Platforms like Buffer, Hootsuite, and native scheduling features on most social networks let you batch-create content and schedule it for optimal posting times. Spend one hour scheduling a week's worth of posts instead of interrupting your workflow multiple times a day.
Content creation assistance. AI writing tools can help you draft blog posts, social media content, email sequences, and product descriptions. They will not replace your voice and expertise, but they can dramatically speed up the first draft process.
Workflow automation. Tools like Zapier, Make, and n8n connect your business tools so that actions in one application automatically trigger actions in another. A new email subscriber can automatically be added to your CRM, tagged based on their entry point, and enrolled in the right email sequence — all without you lifting a finger.
Analytics and reporting. Set up automated dashboards that pull data from Google Analytics, your email platform, and your affiliate networks. Instead of manually checking multiple platforms, you get a single report delivered to your inbox weekly.
The Automation Mindset
Every time you find yourself doing the same task for the third time, stop and ask: can this be automated? The answer is yes more often than you think. The initial setup takes time, but the hours you save over weeks and months make automation one of the best investments a part-time entrepreneur can make, right alongside outsourcing and continuing education.

Hi Mark,
I agree w/ you on the Automatic Article Submitter. I use it in my NM business. I’ve only been using it for a couple of weeks now, but it is a fabulous product and takes so much time off of submitting articles. I have not heard of the other tools, but will definitely check them out. Have you seen an increase in targeted traffic from using them? Thanks for sharing.
Definitely see traffic from all the tools that I use (or I just quit using them).
Has Bookmarking Demon been update recently? I looked into it about a year ago, and people on WF were complaining that it had become out of date and failed to submit to many of the sites.
I’ll look into Deep Linker Pro also. It sounds interesting.
Mike — to be honest, I am not sure. One of the reasons that I did not link to it is that I don’t use BMD anymore. It is quite possible that it is out of date — and I should have made that more clear in the post. Sorry. Mark
