In February 2008, after almost two months of research and experimentation, I was ready to take my internet marketing education to the next level. I had spent that time reading everything I could find about making money online, experimenting with different blogging platforms, and playing with various affiliate programs. Now it was time to put it all together in a live demonstration.
The Learning Journey So Far
Since getting the bug to make money on the internet in late 2007, I had been on an intensive learning path. I experimented with b2evolution and Joomla before settling on WordPress as my content management system. I played with Google AdSense, Azoogle, Commission Junction, ClickBank, and other affiliate programs. I wrote PHP code, purchased software like phpBay for eBay integration, and spent a staggering amount of time reading. Blogs like John Chow and ShoeMoney, free SEO guides, and countless forum posts on Digital Point kept me busy late into the night.
My favorite resource at the time was Caroline Middlebrook's blog. Caroline had earned the nickname “The Honest Blogger” from her readers because she documented her journey with unusual transparency. She had recently released an eBook about building niche sites with WordPress that was particularly helpful for understanding the technical mechanics of getting a monetized site off the ground.
The Niche Super-Site Concept
Inspired by Caroline's eBook and other research, I decided to build a niche site live as a case study. But I wanted to go beyond the basic AdSense-focused niche site that most tutorials covered. I planned to create what I called a “Niche Super-Site,” a fully integrated site with multiple revenue streams including:
- Original and PLR article content
- News feeds for fresh, automated content
- eBay auction listings using phpBay
- Backlink building strategies
- Affiliate marketing from multiple networks
- Google AdSense advertising
The plan was to post daily on my progress throughout February, track the site's stats, accept reader suggestions, and grow the project in real time. I would share links to every resource I used along the way.
What This Series Became
The Niche Super-Site case study became one of the earliest content series on this blog. It documented everything from choosing a niche to selecting keywords to setting up the actual site. It was messy, imperfect, and completely transparent, which turned out to be exactly what made it valuable.
Niche Sites in 2026
The niche site strategy I was exploring in 2008 still exists in 2026, but it has evolved dramatically. Google's algorithm updates have raised the bar for content quality, making it much harder to succeed with thin or automated content. The sites that thrive today are genuine authority sites with deep, expert content on focused topics.
The fundamental insight behind the Niche Super-Site, that you should diversify your revenue streams rather than depending on a single source, remains as relevant as ever. Modern niche sites typically combine affiliate marketing, display advertising, email lists, and digital products rather than relying on any single monetization method.

Thanks very much for the plug Mark, this should be an interesting case study. I have been so busy with my ebook that I haven’t actually done very much work on my niche site for a while!
Thanks, Caroline!
This will be interesting to follow, that’s for sure. I’m always curious to see how other people are doing it. Good luck!
@Simonne — thanks for stopping by. I’m sort of figuring this out as I go along. I am definitely interested in the idea of having sites that do not require a ton of daily work. We’ll see how this goes. I’m trying to write a guide that I would have liked to have found…
Hey,
I too have been playing around with these niche blogs and have been trying to start up a network of them. I’ll be reading your blog to see the progress as yours moves along.
