One of the questions I heard constantly in the early days of Late Night Internet Marketing was this: “Mark, I want to start my online business, but I need to make money right away.” My answer then was the same as it is now. Building a profitable online business takes time, sometimes weeks, sometimes months, sometimes longer. But there are ways to start earning money online almost immediately, and freelance services are one of the best paths.
The Original Recommendation
Back in 2010, I reviewed a product called Transcription Crash Course, created by my transcriptionist Loretta. It was a straightforward 17-page guide that taught people how to start a transcription business from scratch. I bought a copy with my own money because I believed in reviewing products I actually purchased rather than accepting free copies.
The product itself is no longer available, but the principle behind it is more relevant than ever. If you can type and you need income now, providing transcription services is still a viable path. What has changed is the landscape around it.
Freelance Services in 2026
The freelance economy has exploded since 2010. Platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, and specialized service marketplaces have made it dramatically easier to find clients. At the same time, AI transcription tools have transformed the transcription industry specifically. Services like Otter.ai, Rev, and even built-in tools in Zoom and Google Meet can transcribe audio automatically.
Does that mean transcription as a service is dead? Not at all, but it has evolved. The demand has shifted toward editing AI-generated transcripts for accuracy, formatting transcripts for specific use cases like legal or medical records, and creating polished, publish-ready versions of rough automated transcripts. The skill is still valuable. The job description has just changed.
The Broader Lesson: Service First, Product Later
What I really want you to take from this post is the underlying strategy. If you need money now while you build your long-term online business, start by offering a service.
Identify a skill you already have. It does not have to be transcription. It could be writing, graphic design, video editing, social media management, bookkeeping, virtual assistance, or dozens of other skills. The key is that you can deliver value to someone today without building a product first.
Start on a freelance platform. Create a profile on Upwork or a specialized platform in your skill area. Price yourself competitively to land your first few clients and build reviews. You can raise your rates once you have a track record.
Use service income to fund your business. The money you earn from freelance work can fund your hosting, your tools, your email marketing service, and the other expenses of building an online business. This way you are not going into debt to build something that has not generated revenue yet.
Let your service work inform your products. When you work directly with clients, you learn exactly what problems they have and what solutions they are willing to pay for. That knowledge is invaluable when you eventually create your own products.
The Bottom Line
You do not have to choose between making money now and building for the future. Freelance services give you immediate income while you develop the assets, audience, and expertise that will power your long-term business. It is not glamorous, but it works. And sometimes the most practical path is the best one.

You certainly could have gotten a copy for free 😉 Thank you for the full review, I really appreciate having you review the report and I’m glad you liked it enough to share it with your readers. I know you only share the things you like and trust, so that means a lot to me.
