Andrew Hansen was coming to town — well, virtually. Mark recorded a quick video to announce a free webinar about SEO and traffic generation that Andrew would be hosting the following day.

What the Webinar Covered

Andrew Hansen, a London-based internet marketer and long-time friend of the show, had been studying changes Google made to its algorithm and believed there was a rare window of opportunity for fast, free search engine traffic. On the webinar, he planned to reveal a three-step process for capitalizing on that window.

The case studies Andrew shared were impressive for the time:

  • A new site taken from zero to $8,833 profit in 60 days
  • Over 400,000 buying visitors driven to a single small site in 2013
  • A small site generating $100,000 in new revenue in eight weeks using a handful of powerful backlinks

Why Mark Was Excited

Mark was transparent about why this webinar mattered to him personally. He had strong skills in keyword research, market identification, website building, and traffic conversion. But the one area where he was consistently hit and miss was getting traffic to websites. Not every site he built was profitable, and the primary reason was an inability to rank consistently in search engines.

That honest admission is part of what made Late Night Internet Marketing different from other shows. Mark did not pretend to have every answer. When he found someone who could fill a gap in his own knowledge, he shared that resource with listeners.

What Has Changed Since This Post

Mark published this in January 2014. The webinar was a precursor to Andrew Hansen's Rankings Institute course, which focused on organic search traffic generation.

The SEO landscape has transformed completely. The specific Google algorithm changes Andrew referenced in 2014 have been superseded by dozens of major updates, including Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird, RankBrain, BERT, the Helpful Content Update, and the March 2024 Core Update. The backlink strategies that generated those case study results would not work today — and some would result in penalties.

Free organic traffic is harder to earn in 2026. Google's search results now include AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, and other SERP features that reduce click-through rates to websites. Building a site that generates significant organic traffic requires high-quality, original content with demonstrated expertise — not just technical SEO tricks.

The webinar-to-course marketing model remains common, though webinar fatigue has set in for many audiences. Modern course launches tend to use a combination of free workshops, email sequences, and community-based marketing rather than relying on a single live webinar event.
