Updated 2026:<\/strong> This page originally held the transcript from episode 1 of the Late Night Internet Marketing podcast, recorded in the summer of 2009. That first episode was a nervous introduction to a show I hoped might help a few people build internet businesses on the side. More than 16 years later, the podcast is still going. Here is what that first episode covered and how the show's mission has held up over time.<\/p>\n

What the First Episode Was About<\/h2>\n

Episode 1 laid out the premise of the entire podcast: you want to build an internet business, but you are not ready to quit your day job. You have a few hours a week to work on it, usually late at night after the family is asleep. You need a plan, and you need someone who understands that reality.<\/p>\n

That was me in 2009. I was working a demanding full-time job and building my internet marketing business in the margins. Evenings, weekends, early mornings. The podcast was part of that effort, a way to share what I was learning and connect with other people on the same path.<\/p>\n

In that first episode, I introduced the business models we would cover in the series: affiliate marketing, information products, eBay selling, and membership sites. I referenced two resources that were popular at the time: Yanik Silver's Moonlighting on the Internet<\/em> and Jimmy Brown's report on making $10,000 per month online. I also introduced the interview format, promising conversations with successful internet marketers about what they wish they had known when starting out.<\/p>\n

The Part-Time Entrepreneur Problem<\/h2>\n

The core problem I identified in episode 1 has not changed: there is an enormous gap between wanting to build an online business and actually doing it when you have limited time. Most internet marketing advice assumes you can dedicate 40 or more hours per week to your business. For someone with a full-time job, family responsibilities, and maybe three to five quality hours per week to work on a side project, that advice is useless.<\/p>\n

What part-time entrepreneurs need is focus. You cannot do everything, so you need to pick the right things. That principle guided the podcast from episode 1 and continues to drive every episode I produce today.<\/p>\n

What Has Changed Since 2009<\/h2>\n

The internet marketing landscape is dramatically different from when I recorded that first episode.<\/p>\n

The tools are exponentially better.<\/strong> In 2009, building a website required real technical knowledge. WordPress existed but was clunky. Payment processing meant stitching together multiple services. Email marketing platforms were expensive. Today, you can have a professional website, email list, and digital storefront running in an afternoon with tools like WordPress, ConvertKit, and Gumroad.<\/p>\n

Content platforms have multiplied.<\/strong> Podcasting in 2009 meant iTunes and not much else. Today, podcasts reach listeners through Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and dozens of other platforms. Video content, newsletters, and social media offer additional paths to building an audience that did not exist or were not viable for small creators in 2009.<\/p>\n

The information landscape is noisier.<\/strong> In 2009, finding good information about internet marketing was harder, but there was less bad information to sift through. Today, the volume of content about making money online is staggering. Distinguishing genuine expertise from recycled advice requires more discernment than ever.<\/p>\n

SEO has transformed completely.<\/strong> In 2009, keyword stuffing and link building were the primary ranking strategies. Today, Google rewards topical authority, content quality, and genuine expertise. The bar for ranking in search results is dramatically higher, which is actually good news for serious content creators willing to do the work.<\/p>\n

What Has Not Changed<\/h2>\n

The fundamentals I outlined in that first episode remain exactly the same:<\/p>\n

  • You need traffic.<\/strong> Whether from search, social media, podcasting, or paid advertising, you need people finding your content.<\/li>\n
  • You need to provide value.<\/strong> The internet rewards people who genuinely help others. That was true in 2009 and it is even more true in 2026.<\/li>\n
  • You need a monetization model.<\/strong> Affiliate marketing, information products, advertising, services, or some combination. Pick one, learn it, execute it.<\/li>\n
  • Consistency beats talent.<\/strong> The people who succeed are the ones who keep showing up, week after week, month after month. That is the single most important factor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Why the Podcast Is Still Going<\/h2>\n

    I sometimes get asked why I have kept the podcast running for over 16 years. The answer is simple: the mission from episode 1 still resonates. There are still people working day jobs who want to build something of their own on the side. They still need practical, honest advice from someone who has been where they are. That was the promise of the first episode, and I intend to keep delivering on it.<\/p>\n
